Soliman Gamil

The Egyptian Music (1987) ...

Soliman Gamil (سليمان جميل,  b 1924, d. 1994) was an Egyptian composer, musicologist and qanun player ...He experimented with traditional Egyptian instruments in his film and tv work to evoke the sound of ancient Egypt.  This album was issued by the Touch label, TO7.  The music does have a strange atmosphere (in a very good way), and does evoke a very old sound of Egypt ...

Valley of the Kings and Queens ... The main solo instruments in this two-part Egyptian dance are trumpet and arghoul (double pipe bamboo)...  (from sleeve notes).

Pretence and Destiny ... Lyrical composition for folk instruments and chorus.  Main instruments are sallamiya, rababa, trumpet, tabla and doff.

The New Nubia ... Composed in the style of improvisation - the solo instruments are sallamiya, kanoun and trumpet.

Promenade of the Nile ...  Inspired by different styles of folk music improvisation, ended by a new musical construction based on a melody of Egyptian folk song 'Salma ya Salama'...

79-tone Turkish qanun (kanoun)...

Sufi Dialogue ... Played by Abd Rahman Al Khatib (lute) and Soliman Gamil (kanoun). The kanoun is a stringed instrument played with forefingers descended from the Pharaonic harp...

The antique qanun ...
