Laurie Spiegel

Voices Within (1979) ...

Laurie Spiegel's work has been used in the soundtrack to The Hunger Games, and is also on the disc flying aboard Voyager, (which has recently left the solar system) ...  She has also realised astronomerJohannes Kepler's Harmonices Mundi ... She works developing software in order to realise her own works ... Voices Within comes from the Obsolete Systems album (2001)...

"Spiegel was seen by some as a pioneer of the New York new-music scene. She withdrew from this scene in the early 1980s, believing that its focus had shifted from artistic process to product. While she continues to support herself through software development, Spiegel aims to use technology in music as a means of furthering her art rather than as an end in itself. In her words, "I automate whatever can be automated to be freer to focus on those aspects of music that can't be automated. The challenge is to figure out which is which." ...

"Although the term “minimalist”, borrowed from the visual arts, was commonly used for the style of the slowly changing music that began to gain prominence in the early 1970s (think Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Phil Glass), and I have often been grouped with them in being called “minimalist”, I differentiate “minimalist” music from what we used to refer to as “slow change music”. The latter, represented here by the title work of this album, instead of being built by accretion of many individual musical events to form a texture, works by allowing the listener to go deeper and deeper inside of a single sustained texture or tone." ...
